Must have seats for 4/5 and space for music gear. Nothing too flash, but nice and reliable.

you'd be mad to buy a van if you can hire one for £40 a time.

unless you do about 200 odd gigs a year up and down the country.

insurance alone would cost about £40 a month, plus running costs, mantenance etc

My dad would enjoy the maintinence and shortly we will be having to travel the country on a regular basis so.. we need a van

there is a place selling vans on the Tamworth Road opposite the Saracens Head pub (so it's a bit of a way out).
try the motor auctions they have near the Airport at Baginton too.
Have you looked at people carriers? most vans only seat 3 people legally and things like the Renault Espace and the Ford Galaxy have been around for so long now they are getting stupid cheap, although you get what you pay for...

But if you play any gigs within the M25, use a van or any other commercial vehicle, and your engine doesn't meet the Euro 4 emissions standards you will be clobbered with Boris' Low Emission Zone fee.
Which is £200 a day, or a £2000 fine. this is NOT the same as the congestion charge, this applies to everything within the M25.
People carriers however are not classed as commercial vehicles and get away with it.
So if you intend to try and break London...
